Hitchhiking-crab takes a ride on a jellyfish – video | World news

A juvenile coral crab is spotted taking a ride on a jelly blubber by a member of the Terrigal Ocean Swimmers club off Terrigal Beach on the NSW Central Coast. Prof Shane Ahyong, head of marine invertebrates at the Australian Museum, says that both are common in the region and the young crabs are known to be ‘a relatively frequent hitchhiker on the jellyfish’. Although he says it isn’t clear why they do this, it enables the crab to rest, and the jellyfish may be ‘a vantage point’ from which the crab could catch small fish that swim near large jellyfish
